II INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS VISIONS OF THE FANTASTIC:
THE MONSTER OF A THOUSAND FACES
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
December 10, 11 and 12, 2014
THE MONSTER OF A THOUSAND FACES
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
December 10, 11 and 12, 2014
The monster embodies transgression and disorder. Its existence subverts the limits of physical, biological, even moral acceptability. It thus always poses a threat, not just because it metaphorically–mythically– incarnates our fears, but by throwing light on our darker side and reflecting our most hidden desires.
This condition aligns the monster with the fantastic: besides representing (and arousing) our fears, the monster supposes an excellent entryway to problematize our cognitive and hermeneutical codes.
In addition, the monster is a mobile being that evolves across different periods, mutating along its historical and geographical location. The monster resists because our fears persist, because any notion of normalcy and order implicitly entails its own subversion.
The RESEARCH GROUP ON THE FANTASTIC (GEF) convenes all interested researchers to reflect on the forms and meanings the monster takes in modern and postmodern (20th and 21st centuries) fantastic fiction, in literature as well as in drama, film, comic books, television or videogames, and in any language and from any country.
